If you ask me Saturday morning cartoons were the absolute best when I was a kid. On my local ABC channel WMTW 8 at nine am the Bugs Bunny and Tweety Show came on and got over at 9:50am. It was then that we were treated to a short educational animated music video from the Schoolhouse Rocks Collection.
Created by David McCall the original run of the shorts ran from 1973 to 1985 they songs were group together into the categories of Multiplication Rock, Grammar Rock, America Rock, Science Rock, & Computer Rock. Later in 1994- 1996 they added Money Rock and in 2009 Earth Rock. Bob Dorough wrote most of the songs with Lynn Ahrens, George Newall, and others also writing songs.
The songs were released on home video over the years on VHS and later DVD. They were also released on CD in their original form and in 1996 a 15 track album Schoolhouse Rock! Rocks featuring popular bands doing cover versions of the songs were released.
My favorite tracks include:
My Hero, Zero
Three Is a Magic Number
Unpack Your Adjectives
Lolly, Lolly, Lolly, Get Your Adverbs Here
Rufus Xavier Sarsaparilla
The Shot Heard Round the World
I’m Just a Bill
I’m not a big fan of the later songs after the original run. Also while researching this post I discovered the Bob Dorough who composed and performed most of my favorite songs passed away on April 23, 2018 at the age of 94.
I loved listening and watching these when I was a kid and still do to this day. You can find many of them right on You Tube so take a moment to go and check them out.
