CBS Storybreak was a Saturday morning cartoon anthology series that originally aired from 1985 – 1987 with Bob Keeshan aka Captain Kangaroo as host in live action wrap around’s. Each episode was a 30 minute cartoon adaption of a children’s book. Mr. Keeshan would introduce us to the episode giving us a brief synopsis of the story and end with a brief wrap up inviting us back next week.
My two favorite episodes were How to Eat Fried Worms and Chocolate Fever, and I would go on to read both books because of these episodes.
How to Eat Friend Worms is about a boy names Billy who is challenged by his “friend” Alan that he can’t eat a worm a day for 15 days and the winner gets $50! Billy’s friend Tom prepares the worms each day with various condiments.
Chocolate Fever is about named Henry Green who loves chocolate and eats it to such excess that he breaks out in chocolate spots similar to chicken pox.
Later in the early 1990’s these episodes were re-broadcast with Malcolm Jamal Warner as host and had closed captioning hard coded into the episodes.
Less than 20 episodes were produced, but they were re-run several times and I always enjoyed watching them. To me this concept is similar to that of the ABC Weekend Special, however that lasted for 20 years from 1977 – 1997 and 132 episodes.
